A little slow to start but once I was hooked that was it - completely devoured。 Enough trauma to sink the titanic in this one, compelling family drama and unreliable narrators galore 👏🏻

Thank you to NetGalley, Riverhead Books and Ms。 Hawkins for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book。 An honest review was requested but not required。 To be completely honest I have not read Ms。 Hawkins's first "big name" book (Girl on the Train) nor have I read Into the Water。 Many of the psychological thrillers of that time period sort of run together for me。 But I know many readers at work who are rabid about Ms。 Hawkins' books and I was greatly looking forward to seeing if she lived up to Thank you to NetGalley, Riverhead Books and Ms。 Hawkins for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book。 An honest review was requested but not required。 To be completely honest I have not read Ms。 Hawkins's first "big name" book (Girl on the Train) nor have I read Into the Water。 Many of the psychological thrillers of that time period sort of run together for me。 But I know many readers at work who are rabid about Ms。 Hawkins' books and I was greatly looking forward to seeing if she lived up to her hype。I'm pleased to report that this book kept me absolutely gripped from page one。 As with Gone Girl (different author, I know, but bear with me) every single character in the book falls squarely on the "unlikeable spectrum。" However, unlike Gone Girl, every character has something going for them - a personality element, a backstory, etc。, that fosters empathy。 Honestly, this book was as much a tragedy as it was a suspense/thriller/mystery。 I really felt sorry for every character in the story, and sad。 The description of the death of Ben, Carla and Theo's son, is described well enough that it stuck in my imagination for days; this definitely might be a trigger for some。 There is also a briefly described (but evocative and horrific nonetheless) description of the killing of a pet。 And yes, I do realize that this book in its essence a murder mystery, but the deaths of innocents - children, animals - hit differently, you know? I thought the writing was very well-paced and the characterizations well done。 The settings were sort of negligible but that's ok; the focus was definitely on the characters。 The story-within-a-story was also really creative and a nice touch for tying all the narratives together。 Overall I enjoyed this book - I tore through it at top speed! - and I can see it being a huge hit amongst readers in general and where I work, specifically。 I'm happy I got to read it now as I suspect it won't be sitting on shelves for quite some time。 。。。more

I think I definitely went into this one with too high of expectations because of how much I loved The Girl on the Train。 A Slow Fire Burning falls into the “good not great” category for me。 I was hoping for another fast-placed plot, but this one was more of a slow build (I mean it’s right there in the name I guess)。 Additionally, it’s a super character-driven book and I found I only liked one or two characters, so that was kinda tough for me。 Nonetheless I finished it in less than 24 hours so it I think I definitely went into this one with too high of expectations because of how much I loved The Girl on the Train。 A Slow Fire Burning falls into the “good not great” category for me。 I was hoping for another fast-placed plot, but this one was more of a slow build (I mean it’s right there in the name I guess)。 Additionally, it’s a super character-driven book and I found I only liked one or two characters, so that was kinda tough for me。 Nonetheless I finished it in less than 24 hours so it’s definitely well-written! 。。。more

This book is so absorbing, clever plot, intriguing characters and unexpected humour。 I love Paulas easy style of writing, the plot flows without having to think about it or try to work things out。 The characters are believable, I especially liked Laura’s no nonsense character and humorous outbursts, she’s a very true to life character。 The plot twists and turns and just when you think you’ve got it all worked out, it turns again。 Highly recommended, fans of Lisa Jewel will love this。

I absolutely loved The Girl on the Train and was ecstatic when I got to read this book in exchange for my review。Personally I prefer The Girl on the Train but this had a good storyline and was very well written - which is expected by Paula Hawkins。A young man is found murdered and we meet three very different women - Laura who is a suspect, Carla - the murdered man's aunt and Miriam who is the neighbour。 The characters are somewhat unlikeable but for me there was something interesting about each I absolutely loved The Girl on the Train and was ecstatic when I got to read this book in exchange for my review。Personally I prefer The Girl on the Train but this had a good storyline and was very well written - which is expected by Paula Hawkins。A young man is found murdered and we meet three very different women - Laura who is a suspect, Carla - the murdered man's aunt and Miriam who is the neighbour。 The characters are somewhat unlikeable but for me there was something interesting about each of themThe book does not mess around and gets straight into the murder and we are plunged into the storyline。 Each woman's story is intertwined with the others and makes for a very interesting and intriguing novel。I did find the pace quite slow in the middle, but it did not put me off reading further。Thanks to NetGalley, Paula Hawkins and the publisher for allowing me a copy of this book in exchange for my review。 。。。more

I was suspicious of everyone。 It has so many twists and turns。If Hawkins keep writing stuff like this… UNSTOPPABLE I tell you。 It was a palate cleanser compared to my last thriller。 To me, it did not have heart-stopping-OMG-moments but it is truly entertaining and it keeps you intrigued with the question of “who the heck was responsible?”。 Truly a great upgrade from The Girl on the Train。 Rating: 4。5 ⭐️I want to yell “THANK YOU Riverhead Books “ for my gifted copy。 I’m honored to have received such an amazing book! Wow! What a twisty book, a sinister slow boil of a book。 I read A Slow Fire Burning by Paula Hawkins in one sitting。 I could not put it down。 I had to know, had to untangle the interwoven threads of character and plot。 I needed to know about Theo, about what Irene saw, did she see? I actually really enjoyed this audiobook。 I know some people don’t care for the strange timeline, and the book within a book etc。, but I liked it。 I find stories like this so much fun。 I mean, the story was not fun, but trying to figure out what the heck was going on, and who on earth did what to whom, was quite entertaining。 This is definitely not a happy book。 Nor is it a book in which you will fall in love with the characters。 But it is fascinating to watch what can happen when you put a grou I actually really enjoyed this audiobook。 I know some people don’t care for the strange timeline, and the book within a book etc。, but I liked it。 I find stories like this so much fun。 I mean, the story was not fun, but trying to figure out what the heck was going on, and who on earth did what to whom, was quite entertaining。 This is definitely not a happy book。 Nor is it a book in which you will fall in love with the characters。 But it is fascinating to watch what can happen when you put a group of damaged people who don’t get help in close proximity。 This book is the epitome of the phrase “hurt people hurt people“。 Trying to figure out who the murderer was practically broke my brain。 Every 10 pages I thought I had it figured out… I didn’t。 And even when I did, I didn’t actually trust it。 And I loved how the author basically made fun of the book, and people who would critique the book, IN the book。 I see what you did there。 😂The audiobook narrator did a great job。 She had distinct voices for the different characters and didn’t get on my nerves。 Haha。 The tone actually almost reminded me of listening to one of my murder podcasts。 Definitely recommend。 Thanks to Penguin Random House audio for the review copy。 。。。more

I am convinced that the only amazing book Paula Hawkins wrote was The Girl on the Train…。。Which is sad because I can see the vision for this book but the execution was lacking? It’s a very slow build and more than 2 POV to follow。 The ending of course she lets everything and unravel and instead of being shocked or surprised by everything, the last 20% of the book is underwhelming。

In Paula Hawkins's latest thriller, we try to decipher who killed Daniel, a troubled young man who lives on a boat in London。 Around him there are a bunch of (very) troubled characters (trying to avoid spoilers here): a couple who lost their son (trigger warning: child death), Daniel's mother (who's an alcoholic), Miram (the nosy boat neighbor), the deeply hurt Laura, and the lovely lovely Irene (who forgets things)。Some of the characters were hateful, some I just wanted to hug and comfort。 I th In Paula Hawkins's latest thriller, we try to decipher who killed Daniel, a troubled young man who lives on a boat in London。 Around him there are a bunch of (very) troubled characters (trying to avoid spoilers here): a couple who lost their son (trigger warning: child death), Daniel's mother (who's an alcoholic), Miram (the nosy boat neighbor), the deeply hurt Laura, and the lovely lovely Irene (who forgets things)。Some of the characters were hateful, some I just wanted to hug and comfort。 I thought that their depth and pasts were well done。 What "bothered" me (for lack of a better word) is the attempt at a "book within a book" which made us live some of the most traumatising experiences for one of the characters twice。 I just read The Plot recently, and it was impossible not to compare how the "book within a book" plot was executed in both books。 I don't know that it was needed in this book, and I can't say I loved or enjoyed how it was done。This is a 3。5/5 for me。 It definitely kept me reading and wanting to know what happened, and I hurt with some of the characters, but I didn't love the execution。 。。。more

Paula Hawkins completely blew me away with her previous novels, Girl on the Train and Into the Water so of course I couldn’t wait to read whatever she wrote next。 I first learned that Paula was releasing a new novel last fall so I’ve been dying to read A Slow Fire Burning since then。 Fast forward to last Friday when I found her newest novel in my mailbox, I was literally jumping up and down with joy!A young man, Daniel is found murdered on his houseboat。 Laura, Carla, and Miriam are being questioned about his murder。 Each one of these women holds animosity towards Daniel so each has a motive for murdering him。 Do these women hold enough hostility towards Daniel to murder him? Paula Hawkins is such an exquisite author who has mastered the art of the thriller。 She has her unique style of writing and after I read the first chapter of this book, I was immediately transported back to her other novels。The characters in this book are very well written with dimension and depth。 Laura was my favorite but I thoroughly enjoyed reading about each of them and learning how they were all connected。 I also loved the fact that at the beginning of this book there is a map showing where the characters live and how close they are to each other。 The ending wrapped up very nicely with nothing left unanswered。 Of course, there is a big twist reveal at the end。 There were perfectly planted red herrings wings throughout the story but I didn't figure out the twist and was completely shocked by it。 I rarely reread books but I foresee myself rereading this one in the future。 I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I won’t have to wait 4 more years to read her next novel。 I highly recommend this book to all thriller fans。 If you liked Paula’s previous novels, The Girl on the Train or Into the Water then you will definitely like A Slow Fire Burning。 A massive thanks to Riverhead Books for providing me with a gifted copy! 。。。more

Nancy McFarlane

This is a slow burning novel, as the title suggests。 It has lots of unlikeable and unreliable characters, it jumps around a lot, it has at least one bona fide murder and maybe some that weren’t really accidents。 Despite all of this you just must keep reading because the writing is superb, the atmosphere is intoxicating, and it all comes together in a very satisfying manner。
